A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
