Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
