A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
